William E. "Bill" Hughes age 86 passed away Wednesday, July 18 at 10:10PM at St. Elizabeth East Hospital in Lafayette, Indiana. He was a resident of Mulberry, Indiana for the past 56 years.
He was born in Sparksville, Indiana on September 13, 1925. The son of Everett and Hazel Henderson Hughes, both deceased. He was preceded in death by his wife, Vivian Peek Hughes, of fifty plus years in 1997 and one sister: Roberta L. Phillips of Paoli, Indiana.
He is survived by two daughters: Deborah (Raymond) Martin of Clarksville, Indiana and Jacqueline Hughes of Highland, Indiana. Also surviving are three granddaughters: Sandi (Joe) Baete of Henryville, Indiana, Kim Martin of Clarksville, Indiana and Patti (Allen) Frantz of New Albany, Indiana. Also surviving are five great-grandchildren.
Mr. Hughes graduated from Medora High School in 1943 and went directly to Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana where he was a student until his departure to the Army Air Corps. Upon enetering the service he went to gunnery school and became a tail gunner on a B-17, Flying Fortress, flying 35 combat missions over Germany; attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was a retired member of the International Association of Bridge, Structural and Ornamental Ironworkers Union, belonging to the Local #22, Indianapolis, Indiana.
