Waldo "Wally" Loyd Terkhorn

Mr. Waldo “Wally” Loyd Terkhorn, age 86, of Salem, passed away Friday, May 3 at home, surrounded by family and friends.

Mr. Terkhorn was born October 14, 1932 in Brownstown, Indiana the son of Tilford and Clara Wessel Terkhorn.

Waldo was a 1950 graduate of Brownstown High School.  After high school, he joined the U.S. Army.  Waldo was a member and elder of the Canton Christian Church.  He worked at Thompson Dairy for 20 years, Nolting’s IGA, Kocolene Gas, and Subway in Salem.  He was also an auctioneer and a real estate agent for many years.  He was City Councilman for Salem for the fourth district for four terms (16 years) and was adamant about running for office for a fifth term.  He refereed high school basketball for many years and continued to referee “off the court” for many more years.  He enjoyed watching his grandkids play all sports. He was a member of Gideon’s International, Salem Moose Lodge, Henryville Masonic Lodge #651 and American Legion Post #41.

Survivors include his wife:  Shelby Jean Huckleberry Terkhorn, daughters:  Becky (Jim) Baker, and Cathy (Dave) Self both of Brownstown, son:  Gary (Glenna) Terkhorn of North Vernon, and step-daughters:  Cindy (Mike) Richards and Janna Brown, both of Salem.  He is also survived by four grandchildren:  Chris Baker of Jacksonville Beach, Florida, Cassie Baker of Denver, Colorado, Mitch Ray of Brownstown, and Matthew Ray of Bedford, twelve step-grandchildren:  Josh Richards of Overland Park, Kansas, Chad Richards and Zack Richards both of Salem, Shaylee Faulkenburg of Greenville and Jalen Brown of Salem,  Jerry Zolman of Scottsburg, Karma Montgomery and Dea Rudicel, both of North  Vernon, Courtney Cockerham, Lauren Self, Branson Self and Andon Self, all of Seymour, and twelve great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother:  James Terkhorn and his parents.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11:00AM at Canton Christian Church with Pastor Toney Voyles and Paul Martin officiating.  Burial will follow in Crown Hill Cemetery with military honors.  Visitation will be Tuesday from 4-8PM at Weathers Funeral Home and Wednesday from 10AM-time of service at the church.

Memorials can be made at the funeral home to the Canton Christian Church, Schneck Medical Center Hospice Services, or Gideon’s International.
