March 14, 1933 — October 3, 2022

Jackson, Tennessee

Vera Lahoma Morris Henton, 89, passed away on October 3, 2022, in Jackson, TN where she was currently residing. Ms. Vera was born on March 14, 1933, in Rush Springs, OK and was the daughter of Guy & Elsie Morris, and sister to 6 siblings: Eveline Henton (Floyd); Pauline Smith (R.J.); Leon Morris (Hazel); Foster Morris (Peggy); Albert Morris (Barbara); and Earl Morris (Wanda).

She married Vernon Ray Henton on January 6, 1950, and to their union were born 6 children: Sande Barnes of Lexington, KY, Glen Henton (Kathy Wakefield) of Jackson, TN; Gail Henton of Tyler, TX; Ann Collins (Allan) of Midland, TX; Susan Gray (Keevin) of New Albany, IN; and Lorri Purkhiser (Marvin) of Salem, IN.

Ms. Vera was grandmother to 12 grandchildren; Nathan Henton, Eric Henton, Katy Barnes, Alan Henton, Sarah Barnes, Lucas Henton, Rachel (Gray) Nix, Candace (Gray) Jones, Emily Henton, Dana (Purkhiser) McRae; David Gray; & Caleb Purkhiser. She also had 19 great-grandchildren.

Ms. Vera was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings, her husband, and a granddaughter (Katy Barnes).

Ms. Vera’s parents were for a good while migrant farmers, so she lived in many different states as her parents followed the work. When she married Vernon, he was serving in the Navy, and they lived in Maryland, California, Illinois, and Pennsylvania. In 1957 she and he decided that he would go into the ministry in the Churches of Christ. He preached and served as an elder, while they ministered together for churches in Tennessee, Indiana, Missouri, and West Virginia before returning to Palmyra, IN in 1999. During those years of ministry, she taught ladies’ and children’s classes, counseled, and “mothered” many ladies in their spiritual lives as she pointed everyone to Jesus and His Word. She has been known over the years for her sweet spirit and warm, welcoming smile.

Ms. Vera also worked as a custodian in the Harrison County Indiana public school, she made and sold special cakes, and was active in sales with the Tupperware and Amway companies.  More importantly she was a wonderful, serving, and loving wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, and great grandmother.
