Mrs. Sharon Rose Nelson
June 18, 1939 – December 3, 2024
Mrs. Sharon Rose Nelson, age 85, of Salem, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday, December 3rd, leaving behind a legacy of service, and dedication to her family and community.
Born on June 18, 1939, in Washington County, Sharon was the daughter of Robert E. Cauble and Ethel Hattabaugh Cauble Schneider. A woman of faith, she was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church in Salem and an active participant in the Salem and Mitchell Senior Citizens Centers.
Sharon spent over three decades as the Director of Salem Parks and Recreation, becoming the longest-serving director in the city’s history. Her life's work revolved around enriching the lives of Salem’s youth and creating lasting memories for families. She developed many of the city parks still loved by citizens today. Her enthusiasm shone in summers running the City Pool, her tireless efforts in organizing beloved community events like the town-wide Easter egg hunt and Halloween costume contest, and her unwavering commitment to youth football and softball programs that positively impacted thousands of children over the years.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Sharon had a compassionate heart. She dedicated many years as a Court-Appointed Special Advocate (CASA), supporting children in need in Washington County.
Sharon’s greatest joy was her family. She is survived by her loving children: Dennis Nelson (Sally) of Indianapolis, Ronnie Nelson of Salem, and Mindy Guthrie of Salem; her sister Bobbi Sue Arens of Florida; seven grandchildren: Holly, Tommy, Correna, Melinda, Andrea, Adam, and Kendra; and seven great-grandchildren who brought light to her life - as well as many dear friends.
She now reunites in peace with her parents and the children she has deeply missed: Dan Nelson, Robbie Nelson, Jeff Nelson, and Sherri Jo Merola.
Services celebrating Sharon’s life will be held at 11 AM on Friday at Weathers Funeral Home, with burial to follow at Crown Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held Thursday, from 4-8pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Salem Senior Citizen’s Center.
