Phyllis A. Calvert

February 17, 1951 — April 12, 2022

Salem

Phyllis Anne Calvert’s life didn't come to an end with her death. As a faithful servant of the Lord, her “new life” began when she entered into her eternal rest on Tuesday, April 12, 2022, after a long, courageous battle with cancer. She was 71 years old.

Phyllis was born on February 17, 1951, in Searcy, Arkansas to the late

Earl and Flora May Wells.

Mrs. Phyllis was a faithful servant of the Lord. She spent many years working in various children’s homes including Faith Ranch Children’s Home where she served in many capacities. To many young people she became known as Aunt Philly. In her later years she served as chaplain at the Madison County Women’s Correctional Facility. She had a heart for the women’s prison ministry and gave of herself in any way she could to the woman she ministered to. She spent much time teaching, counseling, and praying for the women she had the opportunity to minister to there. She loved country mountain hymns and learned to play the guitar and dulcimer and would sing and play in church and when she “went to prison”.

Phyllis is survived by her daughter, Christy Smith.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Flora Mae (Mitchell) Wells and her brother Burl Wells. She is survived by one brother, Gerald Wells and four sisters, Nita Webb, Patsy Bright, Louise Fura, and Judy Archuletta, along with their family members.

Mrs. Phyllis also left behind her beloved service dog, Max. He served her well for three years and brought her so much joy.

A gathering of friends and family was held on April 18, 2022, at Washington County Baptist Tabernacle at one o’clock for a funeral procession to Lawrenceport Cemetery in Mitchell, Indiana. A graveside service was held at two o’clock. We then gathered back at Washington County Baptist Tabernacle for a memorial service at 3:30 with a meal to follow.
