Mary Christine Newlon died in her home on February 17, 2015 after a brief illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edmund R. Newlon in 1998. Mary was the daughter of Timothy Crotty and Della Adkins. She was born on November 25, 1932 near Toliver, Kentucky in Wolfe County and grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio. She had one brother, Timothy Crotty, Jr., who died at age 7 days, and she is survived by her sister, Della Schmidt Young, who is married to James Young of Salem, Indiana.
Mary went to work at the Woolworth’s store in Cincinnati as soon as she turned 16. Not long after that she met Edmund while he was at the store to visit his brother, the store’s manager. The rest, as they say, is history. They were married April 27, 1952 and celebrated over 45 years of marriage before Ed’s passing. They spent most of their married life in Salem, Indiana. They were the parents of three children. Mary is survived by her daughters, Belinda S. Denny of Sellersburg, Indiana who is married to Paul Denny, and Teresa Newlon Draper of Venice, Florida who is married to Cooper Draper. Her son, Jerry E. Newlon preceded her in death in April 2014. He was married to Charlotte Cook Newlon of Salem, Indiana.
Mary was a devoted Christian woman who shared her faith by showing love to others. She was a member of the Salem (High Street) Church of Christ. She served many in Washington County through the church’s Food and Clothing Bank. She was instrumental in getting the food and clothing bank started in response to the needs of local fire victims. She was a Vacation Bible School Teacher and Sunday School Teacher for many years. Mary was blessed with a beautiful soprano voice which she often shared when called upon to sing in small groups for funerals or to brighten the day of residents at the nursing home. She enjoyed church singings and praising her Lord on any occasion. For many years she was an active child sponsor for the Lifeline Christian Mission in Haiti.
Mary loved her church and her community. She was known for her chocolate pies which she often shared when someone was experiencing a difficult time in life. She had the gift of hospitality and always welcomed everyone. She was also a member of the Washington County Garden Club for a time.
Mary was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother (GG). She is survived by four grandchildren: Jeremy P. Denny (Angie), Phillip S. Denny (Jenni), Trey D. Denny (Sherry) and Paige R. Newlon and six great-grandchildren: Jacob, Avery, Evan, Karlyn, Riley and Grant. She was also blessed to be a step-grandmother to Tabitha Kurtsinger and her children, Cierra, Kaylee, Kolton, and Khloe. She is survived by Edmund’s brother, Andrew Newlon and his wife Martha Lee Newlon of Pekin, Indiana. She has many nieces and nephews who also brought her great joy.
In keeping with Mary’s desire to love and serve others, memorial donations may be made to the Kingsfield Children’s Home in Sellersburg, Indiana.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2:00PM at Weathers Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Crown Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday from 10:00AM-time of service.
