Lowell "Swito" Zink

January 29, 1924 — May 24, 2015

Lowell L. "Swito" Zink, 91, passed away May 24, 2015 at Floyd Memorial Hospital.  Swito was born in Campbellsburg, IN January 29, 1924 to Oliver P. and Lula J. (Naugle) Zink.  He graduated from Salem High School in 1942 and went to work as a mechanic for Silver Fleet Truck Lines in Chicago.  He moved back to Salem where he met his future wife Mable whom he married April 17, 1948.


Swito was one of the founders of Salem Trucks, working both in sales and mechanic work.  Through the 40's, he would do favors for people lettering race cars and signs.  In 1948, he decided to start lettering commercially and founded Zink Signs along with his wife Mable.  They spent their 66 years together mostly in Salem with the exception of 3 years living in Florida due to his father's health.


Swito was preceded in death by Mable Ellen (Overton) Zink August 13, 2014.  He is survived by his wife Virginia (Nicholson) McClure Zink, whom he married on April 20, 2015.

He enjoyed playing music, and was a member of various bands throughout the years playing trombone, violin, guitar and bass.  He was a member of Salem High Street Church of Christ.

Other than his wife Mable, Swito was preceded in death by his parents, 3 sisters: Bertha McKinley, Mayme Martin, & Omega Zink, all of Salem, and a brother: Howard Zink of Okeechobee, FL .  He was also preceded in death by his stepson, Leon "Butch" Cook.

Survivors include a son, Lerry W. Zink (Peggy), Salem, grandchildren Chris (Stacy) Zink and Erich (Sally) Zink of Salem, Bryan (Julie) Cook of Pekin, Melinda Ibegbu of Nigeria, Brenda (Chris) Cantrell of Jefferson City, TN, and Barry (Diane) Cook of Buffalo, KS.  He is also survived by numerous great and great-great grandchildren.

Survivors also include Virginia's two daughters Marchita (Mark) Roseberry and Teresa (Donnie) Brewer of Salem, as well as grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Friday, May 29 at 10:30am at Weathers Funeral Home.  Burial will follow in Crown Hill Cemetery.  Visitation will be Thursday from 4-8 pm and Friday from 9am-time of service.
