Mr. Joseph E. “Gene” Smallwood Sr., age 75, of Salem, passed away Sunday, May 24 at University of Louisville Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky.
Mr. Smallwood was born September 7, 1944 in Big Clifty, Kentucky the son of Joseph Henry and Ethel May Harris Smallwood. He retired from the Courier-Journal after 32 years. He was a member of Community Worship Center in Marengo and Westside Christian Church in Okeechobee, Florida. Gene was an Army veteran. He was a member of the American Legion and DAV #72, serving as Treasurer and Adjutant, and currently Commander. Gene loved his family, playing, joking with, and advising his grandkids and great-grandkids. The grandkids called him “Grumps”. He loved to travel and had visited all fifty states. He loved his winters in Florida, fishing with Denzil and Terry Nesmith. He also enjoyed playing croquet and cornhole with his brothers and cousins. The guys all called him “Scoot”. He was a Little League Baseball Coach in Hardinsburg.
Gene is survived by his wife: Beverly Hamlin Smallwood of Hardinsburg. They were married September 16, 1967. He is also survived by two sons: Paul McGaughey of Hardinsburg, and Joseph Smallwood Jr. (Dana) of Georgetown, a daughter: Leslie McGaughey of Mitchell, five brothers: Jerry Smallwood of Elizabeth, Gary Smallwood of Louisville, Darrell Smallwood of Louisville, Jimmy Smallwood of New Haven, Kentucky and Bobby Smallwood of Leitchfield, Kentucky, two sisters: Doris Willis of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and Sheila Henderson of Leitchfield, Kentucky, 7 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers: Charles Smallwood and Kenny Smallwood and his parents.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11AM at Weathers Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Hardinsburg Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5-8PM and Thursday from 10AM-time of service.
