Mr. John D. Fultz age 79 of Salem passed away Sunday, October 18 at Kindred at Jewish Hospital in Louisville.
Mr. Fultz was born October 28, 1935 in Salem the son of Ellis and Edith Martin Fultz. John graduated from Salem High School in 1953. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in education from Ball State University and earned his master’s degree from Indiana University. John taught for 43 years, 40 of them with Salem Community Schools. He taught third grade, middle school language arts and Driver Education. John also coached girls’ cross country and girls’ middle school and varsity basketball as well as boys’ tennis. He was a basketball referee and baseball and softball umpire.
John was active in the community. He was a member and elder of High Street Church of Christ, Salem City Councilman for 4 years, Washington County Councilman for 8 years, Washington County Board of Commissioners for 4 years as well as Past President. He was Washington County Republican Chairman for 10 years, Ninth District Republican Treasurer/Secretary for 20 years and Delegate to the Republican National Convention in Minneapolis in 2008. John was a member of the Executive and Full Commission Boards of the River Hills Economic Development District and Regional Planning Commission for over 20 years. He was a director of the Salem Public Library Board of Directors for 17 years and served as President in 2002. He was a member of the Washington County Hospital Board. He has served on the Hoosier Uplands Board since 1987. He had been a Chairman of the Board as well as on Executive Committees. He was a member of Washington County Economic Growth Partnership Board from 2007-2011. He was a member of the Washington County Fair Board and a past president and also had received the Indiana State Fair Award. He was a member of the Washington County Tourism Board and Southern Indiana Workforce Board Region 10. He was a member of the Washington County Planning Commission and Indiana Bicentennial Washington County Planning Committee.
He was a member of Salem Senior Citizens where he enjoyed playing Euchre. He was a member of the Washington County Community Foundation for 3 years, Washington County Substance Abuse Council and Washington County Chamber of Commerce and was Citizen of the Year in 2005. He was a fund raiser and participant with the March of Dimes. He was also a member of Salem Exchange Club where he was President, Past President and President Elect and he also received the Golden Deeds Award.
John married Carolyn Nuckols in 1968 and she survives. He is also survived by a son: Ryan Fultz (Kelly) of Louisville, a daughter: Renee Fultz of Salem, a brother: Chester Fultz, two sisters: Mary Ellen Brown and Elizabeth Sedgwick, two grandchildren: Parker and Carter Fultz, many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Cecil Fultz and Irvin Fultz and a sister: Helen Luse.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1:00PM at Weathers Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Crown Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4-8PM and Thursday from 9AM-time of service.
