Joe L. Baker, age 88, of Salem passed away Saturday, November 19 at his home with his family by his side.
Joe was born May 30, 1934 in Salem the son of Harry and Catherine Chastain Baker. In 1936 a baby brother was born, Bill. Harry looking for work would move the family to California in 1940. In 1941 Joe’s mother passed away when he was only 6 years old. He would live with his dad and step-mother during the school year and summers he spent with Mom and Pop Chastain until he was in high school. Harry and Esther lived many years in La Junta, Colorado. Joe then lived full time in Indiana and graduated from Campbellsburg High School in 1952.
Joe was a Church of Christ preacher for 30 plus years, but a Bible class teacher for even longer. Teaching the Bible classes at church and at home studies were his passion. He preached at Monroe Church of Christ on his 87th birthday, about God’s glory as recorded in Exodus 34. He loved poetry, memorizing many poems throughout the years. Joe also memorized many of the Psalms. He was a carpenter for over 40 years. Joe was a lifetime member of the NRA and was a firm believer in the 2nd amendment. Joe taught Building Trades at South Central Vocational School.
On August 16, 1953 Joe married Waneta Walton Baker. He is also survived by two sons: Chris Baker (Jaulita), and Bill Baker (Karen), 7 grandchildren: Chad, Sheree, Travis, Ryan, Ragon, Christy, and Byron, 13 great-grandchildren: Jude, Maddox, Reid, Kate, Jack Ryan, C.J., Hunter, Rebecca, Jaxson, Lily, Emma, River, and Asher, a step-brother: Don Schultz, and a step-sister: Rita Allen.
He is preceded in death by two sons: Don Baker, and Jim D. Baker, a brother: Bill Baker, and his parents.
Funeral services will be held at 11AM Saturday at Weathers Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Smedley Cemetery. Visitation will be held Friday from 4-8PM and Saturday from 9AM-until time of service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Washington County Community Foundation.
