James (Jim) Cecil Voyles, 81, of Salem passed away at his home on February 18th, 2022, following a brief battle with lung cancer.
Jim was born on May 23rd, 1940, in Salem, Indiana, to Warder and Ruby (Alexander) Voyles, who preceded him in death by over 40 years. He was also preceded in death by his brothers Robert “Bob” Voyles and Guy Voyles, and sister Joyce Voyles. Jim grew up near Organ Spring and lived in Salem his entire life. He attended Adams School and two years at Salem High School, eventually earning his GED.
As a young boy Jim mowed the Mount Carmel cemetery and worked for farmers, establishing a good work ethic that he maintained his entire life. Later he worked for Fultz & Shanks, Salem Tincraft, Gambles Store, the Charlestown Ammunition plant, and finally worked at Haas Cabinet Company, retiring from there after about 35 years.
Jim married Shirley June (Lyles) Voyles in 1962, and this July would have been their 60th wedding anniversary. Jim is survived by his wife June, sons Timothy Voyles, Christopher Voyles, Matthew (Adriane) Voyles and Michael (Courtney) Voyles; Grandchildren: Tanner (Zoe) Voyles, Gavin Voyles, Reese Voyles, Marshall Voyles, Jonas Voyles, Luke Voyles, Lincoln Voyles, Evie Voyles, Elise Voyles, Josie Voyles, Annalea Voyles, Novi Voyles, Riley Voyles, and Ryan Voyles; great-grandchildren: Aurora Voyles, Eliana Voyles and Azalia Voyles, and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
Due to his background, Jim was known as a jack of all trades, often being called on by family and friends for advice or help with projects. On drives around Washington County, he often remarked “I worked on that building” or “I put in their furnace.” A family friend once said, “Jim could fix a broken light bulb.” Jim was a very humble and caring man who loved his family and his and June’s extended family. He was proud of his sons and their children, and often spoke kindly of his nieces and nephews, as well as those who married them.
Visitations are scheduled for 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Monday, February 21st and 10:00 am to 1:00 pm on Tuesday, February 22nd, with a funeral service to follow at 1:00 pm. Burial will follow the service in Franklin Cemetery. The services will be held at Weathers Funeral Home, 106 S Shelby St, Salem, IN 47167.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the American Cancer Society or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place Memphis Tennessee 38105, in Jim’s name.
