Mr. Arthur F. Smith, age 87, of Salem, passed away Tuesday, September 14 at Meadow View Health Care Center.
Mr. Smith was born April 7, 1934 in Pasadena, California the son of Dr. Cecil and Helen FitzSimmons Smith. The family lived in California and Missouri, where Dr. Smith died, until 1972. Then they moved to Salem. Arthur had begun his upholstery work in Missouri and continued it in Salem until his eyesight problem caused him to begin selling collector model cars and automobile literature at swap meets and car shows in the Midwest and Eastern states. He was a collector of antique cars and a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church.
Arthur married Norma Root, a Salem High School Latin and English teacher on July 15, 1978. Arthur loved to spend time with his two brothers, Father Alberic and Cecil Smith, newspaper editor in Salem. Father Alberic was a Franciscan Priest, who remained in California.
Cecil and Martha Smith with their children: Jennifer, Sharon, John and Paul, were very dear to Art. Norma’s family also enjoyed sharing their families’ activities with Art.
Survivors include his wife, Norma, his sister-in-law, Martha, two nephews: John (Jane) and Paul (Barbara) Smith, two nieces, Jennifer (Mark) Olesh and Sharon (Jess) Bussert, and all their children. He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Father Alberic and Cecil, as well as his parents.
Private funeral services and burial were held at St. Patrick Catholic Church and Cemetery.
