Mrs. Alice McGinnis, age 105, formerly of Salem passed away, Saturday, February 26 at her home.
Mrs. McGinnis was born July 24, 1916 in Little York, Indiana the daughter of William Wilson and Ada Davis Wilson. She was a 1933 graduate of Little York High School. She was a homemaker for most of her life but worked for Bata Shoe Co. in Salem for 9 years. She was a member of Salem Presbyterian Church, and Eastern Star Chapter 107 in Scottsburg for 87 years. She was a former member of Washington Co. Art Guild, Southside Homemakers Club, Friends of the Library, Blood Bank, a Tour Guide at the Stevens Museum of Art, and the Writer’s Bloc.
Alice also attended Brown Bag Supper nights at Presbyterian Church, played Hand and Foot several times a week and Dominos on Thursday evenings with friends. In her 80’s she took a quilting class given by Dorothy Moss, a computer class and art classes though the adult education classes offered at Salem High School. She would later go on to complete a college course in Literature of Western World offered at the high school. Alice loved to paint, work daily crossword puzzles, write in her daily, journal and listen to Books on Tape.
She is preceded in death by her husband: Hobert McGinnis they were marred May 4, 1935. She is also preceded in death by five brothers: William, John, George, Gordon, and Fred Wilson, four sisters: Ellen Fleenor, Bessie Perry, Jean Mount, and Faye Pooler.
She is survived by her children: William McGinnis, and Mary Carter both of Indianapolis, three grandchildren: Bryan McGinnis, Andrew Carter, and Melinda Scheidt, three great-grandchildren: Richie McGinnis, Holli Scheidt, and William Scheidt, and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1PM Saturday, March 5 at Weathers Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Crown Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held Saturday from 11AM-until time of service at the funeral home.
